Everybody Po-ké-mon

If you don't like pokémon I suggest that you turn away now, unplug your computer and hide under your bed till moon rise.

I've been on a bit of a pokemon binge lately. It started with a contest, turned into a comic, and had me reminising the good ol` days of fruitless battles, insane music and many hours pounding away at the ye old Gameboy.

...and had me playing the latest version on my DS.

Anyway, onto the art.

My entry into already said competition, pokemon trainer Shu. Before this I hadn't drawn pokemon in over 10 years. I'm glad to see that I've improved.

Having come up with a complete and detailed background for Shu I though it would be fun to introduce her. Turned into a three page comic.

And the latest finished piece, the PokeMeme. Actully if was finding the meme that lead me to the competition. Stars my persona pulling all the stunts I would do, including a run in with a very big bearlike fellow. Looks like a bear, sounds like a bear, acts like a bear. One should treat it as a bear.

Close up of one of the panels. The top got all cropped off. Eevee ginjinka, she turned out real purdy :3

Wish me luck, now I've got to wait and see if I got into round 2 of the contest.

Ergonomics

now if only I sat like that in real life...
I like my magical sparkles <3

Highly Recommended...posts regarding the cool thingamajigs of animation ep.01

hmmm the new Toy Story 3 trailer gives us some more insite into the story. It's gotten me very excited for the film, not that I wasn't already excited.

A student animation worth mentioning (that I've spent the past week trying to find ANYWHERE)
How the Joneses' 23rd Goldfish Narrowly Escaped Death by Cleo Chiang
Short but to the point and extremely funny come the end. I first saw this some 4 years ago. I think it's great, so great infact that it went and planted some roots in my long term memory and survived.

Introducing...me

So we have been encouraged to post an edited version of an email about ourselves courtesy of our teacher.

Now I don't have that email anymore so I'll have to run off memory, attempt to recreate, fail and instead indulge you in my awesomeness make up something buyable and true.

Hi, my name is Scheree. I'm presently 22 years old and I study animation. I also go by my nickname Swe, but that's not important right now.

I am a major fan of many animated cartoons, feature films, persons behind such wonderful creations and the studios behind them. I shall attempt to name some and name the persons behind them that I worship adore.

My favorite films of all time (or for now atleast) is Monsters Inc. [Pixar] and Lilo & Stitch [Chris Sanders]. I also have enjoyed to a large degree Horton Hears A Who [Blue Sky Studios], Ponyo [Hayao Miyazaki /Studio Ghibli] and Beauty & the Beast [Disney].

Cartoons, I could go on forever naming them, but my hightime favorites would have to include: Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends [Craig McCracken], Jane and the Dragon [Weta Workshop], Danny Phantom [Butch Hartman] and Avatar: The Last Airbender [Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko]

Anime, I could also go on forever. Most of my favorites a were the freebies on tellie before school. Beyblades, Pokemon, Card Captors, Sailor moon, Samurai Pizza Cats (I wonder who remembers that one!), Digimon Adventure, Dragon Ball Z, Zoids, One piece. Chances are if it was on, I was into it. I've also enjoyed Inuyasha, Sakura Wars and Princess Tutu. My current addiction is Naruto. Don't talk to me about english vs. japanese. I've always lived with the english dubs an thus I like them first. That and I don't have to watch to know what's going on.

People! I'm going to repeat some from the above: PIXAR (because they are all as a collective group awesome), Chris Sanders, Hayao Miyazaki, Craig McCracken, Butch Hartman.

I also really like John Lasseter :) He's my animation hero. thankyouforsavingdisney

I like these people, not only for their individual styles but their ability to tell a great story. That and the animation is superb to watch.

Why am I here at SBIT? I want to learn animation to improve my own skills and to possibly help me get into the industry should I choose to follow that path.

Thank you. I hope I haven't bored you to death with some insite of moi. Please don't be afraid to stop by and talk to me. I'm keen to make some wonderful new friends :)

Cheers.

Animation cantation

Now for those of you who do actually stop by and look at this (I know there at least three of you), this artBlog is now also being for my animation studies. So now there's a good reason for me to post more active like and not just do it in dumps.

Moving on. I figure seeing as I'm studying animation, it would be worth putting the few that I've worked on here. After all they were all done before animation school and it would be better chronologically for them to come first rather than later. That or I have some really warped logic going on upstairs.

So let us proceed onto the few projects I have worked on in the past.

Please keep all extra limbs inside the vehicle at all time, and please no flash photography. You'll scare away the creature asleep at the desk that is known as the animator.

Order is as always. Oldest to newest. Click on the titles to go through to the animations.

[cue tardis space/time vortex music]

The year was 2005. A group of first year design students were having their end of year exhibition. As the jobs got divvied up an idea occurred. With two students keen on animation why not make one as an introduction to the class. And so myself and another student got given the task. We concepted the design for each of the other students and teachers (which can be seen in the background). Before animation could be started said other student dropped out of the project and I somehow pulled the rest together in Flash in two and a half weeks.

2006, major project for the second year graphic design students. I stumbled across some beautiful music by Helen Trevillion, which in turn sparked the story. After getting permission to use her song, Over the Waterfalls, the animation was story boarded onto paper, revised then taken to the computer. Drawn entirely in Flash it took eight months to complete.

2007. Not much to say about this one. Took about an hour to produce.

2009. A promotional animation for the mob I was working for before I gave up good money and position of power for the life of a starving student. The red & blue houses and the logo were pre-existing (in other words I did not draw or create them). The rest was hand drawn and created in flash. Took about 3 months to complete. My roles during the duration of this project included script consultation, storyboarding, rough and final animation, and sound (special effects and voice over).

Now the last thing I have to write about, because I technically can't just go show it off like the above, is Being Safely Smart.
Developed by the University of the Sunshine Coast and Queensland Police Service, this project ran from mid 2007 right through to the end of 2008 (yup, a year and a half) and at the beginning of 2009 had a short exhibition along with it's launch. stages were designed to read in a comic-book like style mixed with animation followed then by a game. The final finished product was an 8 level online game.
Roles covered a number of areas including: concept art; storyboarding; script consultation; rough and clean-up animation; and character, game and environment design. I was the only animator on the project (and only person who had any idea on how it should be handled). A couple of other freelance artists were brought onto the project, however they did not stay on long enough to contribute much work.
